最低限の英単語で誰もが自由自在に英会話ができないものかと考えた人がいます。イギリスの言語学者で哲学者で博士のチャールズオグデン（1889～1957）という人。彼は今でいう中学１～2年レベルの簡単な英単語850個で英会話のあらゆる表現を駆使できるようするベーシック英語という学習方法を考案。オグデンによると、通常の英語を学習するには7年、エスペラント語には7ヵ月必要であるのに対して、ベーシック英語は7週間で学習することができるとされる。そのためベーシック英語は、難解な内容の書籍を全世界向けに刊行しようとする企業や、短期間で英語を学ばせようとする語学スクールで活用されています。世界中、とくにアジアにおいて教えられる英語の初級者向け語彙として使われる基本850語リストは、オグデンのベーシック英語が今日まで生き残ったものです。簡単で一度は耳にされた事がある英単語ばかりですので英語初心者でフィリピン留学される方は出発前までにぜひ目を通してくださいませ。耳慣れた単語ばかりですので1週間で完全暗記できます。この英単語で武装してフィリピン留学にのぞむのとそうでないのとでは結果に雲泥の差が生じるので英語ビギナーはぜひぜひ渡航前に暗記してください。
